The Good

!

Great for your pellet grill shelf for grill-side prep

!

Cutting board is magnetic

!

Made of bamboo material, great for cutting boards

!

Small but mighty. Some don’t like the small size but I’ve found it to be the perfect size for several applications.

The Bad

"

It’s a bit small (9.5″ X 13.5″) and designed for grill-side prep support—not your all-in-one prepping station.

"

There are cheaper options on the market

"

The magnet could be stronger to avoid accidental movements while cutting on the board.

Bottom Line

Overall, it’s hard to find a lot wrong with the ThermoPro TP20, and at this price point, it’s a solid addition to your grilling arsenal. Getting the unit set up is a breeze and the preset meat temps make grilling and smoking easy. In my tests, it worked very well with my pellet grill with temps up to 500° but the wires can withstand up to 716°. I found the thermometer to be very durable overall but learning how to control the unit takes some getting used to. I personally would like to have a fully Bluetooth and fully wireless grill thermometer but have and will continue to use this on a regular basis! I do recommend buying the hard carrying case which will keep the device organized and safe.

Price

  • Price Score 80% 80%

All things considered, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better priced wireless grill thermometer that packs the features of the TP20. This is why I give it a 100/100 score on price—it’s just simply hard to beat in this range. There are more expensive options on the market with more features, and of course, less expensive options as well, but be careful you don’t trade quality and durability to save a few bucks. Keep in mind that you’re buying something you’ll be using and depending on often—dependabiblity trumps saving a few bucks any day of the week!

Usability

  • Usability Score 80% 80%

Effortless Syncing
Setting up and syncing the devices are seriously effortless—simply put the batteries in and they sync together automatically.

Present USDA Approved Meat Temps
The TP20 has nine programmed preset internal meat temps that are set by the USDA. In addition to those presets, you have five doneness options (rare, med rare, medium, med well, and well done) built right in. Here is the meat temps built-in Ground Beef, Ground Poultry, Beef, Veal, Chicken, Pork, Poultry, Lamb, and Fish.

Just so you know, you can override these settings and add your own if desired.

Monitor 300ft Away
You heard that right, the units talk to each other effortlessly as long as they are within 300ft of each other.

Interface
While I didn’t have a hard time learning the interface, it’s not exactly intuitive right away, it takes some learning. Selecting meat teams and doneness is simple but setting timers or customizing the presets, is not straightforward without direction for most users.

Durability

  • Durability Score 90% 90%

Construction
When you open the ThermoPro TP20, it’s easy to tell that it was built to last. The probs and probe wires feel strong and durable, the receiver buttons are large and tight, and the LCD displays utilize basic technology that will last for years to come.

Accidently, Weather Tested
Now, this wasn’t purposely part of my test but after leaving the units outside in the rain, I quickly learned that these units withstand weather conditions really well. After enjoying a tasty pork butt, I realized what I had done and quickly ran out to ensure the TP20 still worked—it did and I remain impressed.

I’m not suggesting you leave your TP20 rain, sleet and snow but it’s nice to know that it’ll apparently hold up if something like that happens.

Probs
If you read reviews as I do, you’ll find that the TP20 has a 4.4 out of 5-star rating on Amazon and is an Amazon Choice product—pretty impressive. In those reviews, you’ll find that there are a few customers who have experienced faulty probes that led to a bad experience. With that said, you’ll also notice that ThermoPro stands behind their product and will send brand-new probes if needed, you just need to ask for it.

Design

  • Design Score 90% 90%

While I’m not totally in love with the design of the TheromoPro TP20, it’s simple design is kind of the overall point in this case. If you’re looking for an affordable, high-quality food thermometer, then the fact that the design of the TP20 is nothing super special, is not really a huge consideration.

There are a few things I really like about the design that makes this a very functional device.

  • Both the receiver and transmitter are wrapped in a thick rubber making drops less of a potential issue.
  • The bright orange rubber makes it easy to find.
  • The display font size is large and very easy to read.
  • The buttons are large for my fat fingers.
  • Both devices are small and easy to store, although, the probe wires can be troublesome. That’s why you need this case!
